Abstract
This research aimed to identify and describe the teacher's strategies to overcome students' laziness in learning English at SMP N 7 Fatuleu. This study employed a qualitative research design. The subjects of the study were one English teacher and thirty seventh-grade students. The data were collected through classroom observation and interviews with the English teacher. The data were analyzed descriptively by identifying, classifying, interpreting, and drawing conclusions from the findings. The findings revealed that the teacher implemented various strategies to reduce students' laziness through three stages of the teaching process: pre-teaching, while-teaching, and post-teaching activities. In the pre-teaching stage, the teacher motivated students, activated their prior knowledge, and explained the learning objectives. During the while-teaching stage, the teacher used interactive teaching methods, encouraged active participation, organized group work, asked questions, gave rewards, and provided individual guidance to passive students. In the post-teaching stage, the teacher reviewed the lesson, provided feedback, checked students' understanding, and encouraged students to continue learning. The interview results also showed that these strategies improved students' motivation, classroom participation, and responsibility in completing assignments, although some students still required additional encouragement. In conclusion, the teacher's strategies were effective in overcoming students' laziness in learning English. The implementation of interactive teaching strategies, motivation, positive reinforcement, and active classroom participation contributed to improving students' learning motivation and engagement.
