Abstract

This research was conducted with the title: The use of skipping technique to improve reading comprehension to eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Kupang. The research problem is "Does the use of skipping techniques improve students' reading comprehension?" The aim of this research is to find out whether skipping technique in speed reading can improve reading comprehension abilities or not. To answer this research problem, the writer used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design by comparing two groups given different treatments. The first group was the group that received treatment totaling 17 students and the second group was the group that did not receive treatment totaling 17 students. Both groups were assigned to carry out a pre-test. The group that received the treatment was taught descriptive text using skipping technique and the group that did not receive the treatment was given descriptive text but was not taught skipping technique in speed reading. From the pre-test results the data showed that the total score of the experimental group was smaller than the control group, namely 795 < 1005. Then both classes were given a post-test, after being given treatment in the experimental group, the total score of the experimental group was higher, namely 1245 > 950. Based on the results of the student test calculations was seen that there was a difference between pre-test and post-test carried out by 34 students as a sample students of SMP N 2 Kupang. The calculate t- value obtained is 3.54, which is greater than the t-table, namely 2.03, so the accepted hypothesis is the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. From the accumulated data above, it can be concluded that teaching using skipping technique can improve students' reading comprehension skills.
