Abstract
This study aims to determine whether and to what extent the use of the four square writing method improves students' writing skills. In addition, this study also aims to identify students' motivation when applying the four square writing method to Grade VIII students of SMP PGRI Haumenibaki. The method used in this research is classroom action research. In collecting data, researchers used observation. The research methodology to improving student writing skill. This research consisted of two cycles and each cycle consisted of four steps, namely: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study were 30 students of class VIII A at SMP PGRI Haumenibaki. The data collected is qualitative but also supported by quantitative data. Qualitative data obtained through observation and documentation. The data are in the form of field notes, observation checklists and photographs. Meanwhile, quantitative data was collected from the results of student activities and student test results in cycles one and two. The average scores of each test were compared to find out the students' improvement in writing skills. Based on the results of research and discussion, there is a significant increase in the results of student observations in student learning activities using the four square method. This can be seen from the test results in cycles one and two with the score in cycle one being 77.5% while the test results in cycle two were 91.2%. This means that by using the four square method, students' writing skills increased.
