Abstract
The objective of this research is to find out whether using short story can increase students’ vocabulary at SMP Negeri 10 Kupang. This research was pre-experimental design, the population of this study were seventh grade-A students at SMP Negeri 10 Kupang. The total of population was five classes consisting of 100 students, the sample was one class consisting of twenty students. To collect the data, researchers used tests to measure students’ vocabulary mastery through short stories in the form of pre-test and post-test by apply t-test. This research was vocabulary test. The result of this study showed that the average pre-test score was 977, score of post-test was 1680,diference score of pre-test and pos-test was 396, difference score percentage of pre-test was 488, post-test was 8400, it means that there was an increase in the percentage after doing post-test. So, the score of posttest are higher than pretest.Theresult of statistical analysing between pretest and post test for the significant level 0.5 result of statistical analysing between pretest and post test for the significant level 0.5 with(df)=20 1=19 are 1.73 and analysing observe score are 20.159 (20.159>1.73). thus, t-observed was higher than t-table. Based on the result of this research, the researcher concluded that short story improves students’ vocabulary.
