Abstract
This not a culture that has just been heard, but until now there are still many people who do not understand about it. In this thesis the author explains the signs found in the ceremony of the Mekala-Kalaan Ritual on The Balinese Wedding Ceremony based on the theory of Pierce in Cobley (2001:31), Semiotic is a study that describes a sign in an interpretative process. A sign is something that stands in a well defined kind of relation to two other things are sign, object and interpretant. That the research is focuses on the divided sign becomes icon, index, and symbol. In completing this research, the researchers focused on using qualitative methods which were carried out by grouping picture from YouTube with videos conducting interview with the ceremonial leaders and conducting data processing. The result of the study, there are 10 found of signs. Found of sign in The Mekala-Kalaan Ritual on The Balinese Wedding Ceremony among others: Sanggah Surya ‘Palace bamboo’, Tikeh Dadakan ‘small mat’, Keris ‘ceremonial knife’, Benang putih ‘white thread’, Tegen-tegenan ‘bunder of responsibility,’ Suwun-suwunan ‘portable means’, Dagang-dagangan ‘merchandise’, Sampat Lidi ‘broom stick’, Sambuk Kupakan ‘ coconut husk’, Tetimpung ‘bamboo on fire’. The meaning of the sign in the way of life of the people of the Mekala-Kalaan Ritual on The Balinese Wedding Ceremony is a symbol of strength, love and care, openness, fertility, financial support, strength in the familly, warmth for the soul and modesty, if there is problem that should be discussed or agreed before making the decision. So The Mekala-Kalaan ritual must be carried out before the wedding ceremony, so that the marriage can be pure physically and mentally.
