Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to investigate teaching of vocabulary using pictures to improve students' abilities in vocabulary. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 10 Kupang, with the population consisting of grade VII students. The method used in this study was quantitative, and the research design was quasi experimental. The instrument used in this study was a multiple-choice test. The data was obtained by calculating average student scores. The results showed that there was a significant difference between scores of students in an experimental group and a control group with an average score of 89.4 in the experimental group and 81.0 in the control group. There is a significant result between pre test and post test based on the result value; the calculated t-value (14.5) is greater than the table value t (1.70) with df=N-2. This study means that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. This shows that using pictures in vocabulary teaching can help students' vocabulary skills. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that using pictures in vocabulary teaching as a learning medium can improve students’ vocabulary ability.
