Abstract

This research focuses on the classroom environment in the context of English learning for students in rural village of Jerusu. The aim is to analyze both physical environment, and social environments—particular emphasis on the teacher’s role in the classroom at SMP Negeri 2 Pulau-Pulau Terselatan. This research employs a qualitative method, using observations and interviews as data collection instruments. The findings reveal that: (1) physical environment generally supports student learning: learning space: adequate space for activities, furniture: chairs and tables are comfortable and flexible; however, there are issues related to seats availability, lighting: has good lighting, and air quality: excessively high temperatures in the afternoon. (2) In social environment, the focus is on the teacher's role, where the teacher perform six roles: learner, facilitator, assessor, manager, evaluator, and guide, in their own ways, adapting their approaches to the conditions of the rural setting. This study is expected to contribute to the improvement of education, particularly in rural schools, by supporting teachers in developing more engaging and effective English language learning experiences for students.
