Abstract

This research studied the effect of question and answer method on students’ speaking ability at SMP Satap Fatukoto, with a population of students in grades VII A and VII B. The main aim of this research is to determine whether or not there has been an improvement using the question and answer method in classes VII A and VII B with a population of 40 students. This research uses a quantitative experimental methods, data is collected from speaking tests and description pictures. Data can be determined by calculating the average score of students in the experimental group and control group. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the scores of students in the experimental group and the control group, with an average score in the experimental group of 71.1 and in the control group of 62.25. There are significant results between the pre test and post test based on the result values, the calculated t value (4.63) is greater than the t table value (1.68) with df – N-2. This means that the hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the hypothesis (H1) is accepted. This shows that use of question and answer method can improve students' speaking abilities. Apart from that, the total score in the experimental group was 1422 and the total score in the control group was 1245. From the results of this research it can be concluded that using the question and answer method can improve the speaking skills of class VII A and class VII B students of SMP Satap Fatukoto.
