Abstract
Turn- taking Strategy is a type of teaching and learning strategy in formof conversation and discourse where participants speak one at a time in alternating turns. This Study Entitled: “AN ANALYSIS OF TURN TAKING STRATEGIES OF TEACHER AND 8th GRADE STUDENTS’ INTERACTIONS IN ENGLISH CLASSROOM AT SMPS SWADAYA TARUS”. The purposes of this research are: (1) to identify types of turn taking strategies used by teacherandstudents in English class of SMPS Swadaya Tarus. 2) To identify the dominant strategy of turn taking used by teacherandstudents in the English class. This research is analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method because the writer uses description based on the quality comprehensive in the analysis. Based on the metaphor classification by the theory of Yule (2022), the writer found that there are three types of Turn –Taking strategy used by the teacher and students in the English class of SMPS Swadaya Tarus including Overlap, Interruption, and Back – Channel Signal,. Besides the writer also found that Dominant type of Taking strategy used by the teacher and students in the English class of SMPS Swadaya Tarus is Interruption with a number of 21 Responses, followed by Overlapwith12 Responses, and the last type is Back – Channel Signal with 3 Responses. In addition, it is expected thatthe results of this research could be an extra information in studying Teaching and Learning Strategy that focused onTurn Taking strategy and the types of Turn – Taking Strategy.
