Abstract

This research was conducted under the title‘’An Analysis on the Main Character of cross the line movie Using sigmund freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory’’. This study aims to analyze the personality and behaviors of the main character Maya in the Indonesian film Cross the Line (2022) used Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic framework, which investigates the interplay between the id, ego, and superego. The research objectives are two fold: to analyze and describe Maya's virtual character traits, and to examine how Freud's tripartite components manifest in her actions and decisions throughout the narrative. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The primary data resource is the film Cross the Line, with the data gathered through documentation techniques, including intensive viewing, transcribing, and systematic note-taking of relevant behaviors, dialogue, and scenes. The researcher serves as the primary instrument to highlight key behavioral points and evaluate them through a psychological lens. The findings reveal that Maya’s psychological structure undergoes dynamic adjustments under severe crisis. First, the id operates prominently in her instinctual and emotional impulses to escape absolute poverty and satisfy an urgent desire for immediate financial stability to fund her sick mother's medical expenses, causing her to blindly trust an unverified overseas employment agent.Second, her ego develops as a rational survival tool when faced with the harsh, exploitative reality of the ship; it acts as a pragmatic mediator, leading her to suppress immediate emotional breakdowns and realistically accept morally questionable work as the only viable mechanism to resolve her debts and medical crisis. Third, her superego remains profoundly active, manifesting as severe internal friction, guilt, hesitation, and deep emotional distress before performing her duties, alongside demonstrating empathy and moral concern for other suffering crew members. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that Maya's behavior is a complex synthesis of these three conflicting forces, illustrating how extreme socioeconomic pressure pushes the rational ego to compromise between base survival instincts and internalized moral consciousness.
