Abstract
Listening is one of the most challenging English language skills for Indonesian EFL students due to their limited exposure to authentic spoken English. This study aimed to investigate whether the use of podcasts significantly improves the listening skills of tenth-grade students at SMK Negeri 5 Kupang. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and posttest. The sample consisted of 40 students, divided into 20 students in the experimental class and 20 students in the control class. Data were collected through listening tests administered before and after the treatment and analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent-samples t-test with IBM SPSS Statistics. The findings revealed that the mean score of the experimental class increased from 70.65 on the pre-test to 88.47 on the post-test, while the control class showed only a slight increase from 54.12 to 56.30. The independent-samples t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups (t = 7.290, p < .001), indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis(H₀) was rejected. These findings demonstrate that the use of podcasts as instructional media significantly improves students' listening skills. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to integrate podcasts into listening instruction to create a more authentic, engaging, and effective learning environment.
