Abstract
This study entitled Narrative Construction of Women in the Film “Anora”: A Qualitative Analysis of Gender Representation aims to analyze how women’s narratives are constructed and how gender is represented in the film Anora (2024). The research focuses on examining women’s narrative construction through visual elements, dialogue, and characterization, as well as identifying the representation of gender embedded within the film’s narrative. This research employs a qualitative research method using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, which emphasizes three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The data source of this research is the film Anora (2024), and the data consist of selected scenes, dialogues, visual elements, and narrative situations related to women and gender representation. The data were collected through documentation and systematic observation by repeatedly watching the film, transcribing relevant dialogues, and identifying significant visual and narrative signs. The findings reveal that women’s narratives in Anora are constructed through the interaction of visual framing, dialogue, and characterization that highlight women’s agency, vulnerability, and socio-economic constraints. At the denotative level, women are portrayed through explicit visual and narrative elements that show their roles and positions within social structures. At the connotative level, the film conveys implied meanings related to power relations, gender expectations, and social pressure. At the mythic level, the narrative reinforces and questions patriarchal ideology by naturalizing certain gender norms and inequalities. It can be concluded that Anora represents gender as a socially constructed position shaped by power relations, class dynamics, and cultural ideology.
