Abstract

The use of the mother tongue (L1) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms remains a widely discussed issue because students frequently rely on it to understand instructions, unfamiliar vocabulary, and complex language concepts. While limited use of L1 can facilitate comprehension, excessive dependence may reduce students' exposure to English and hinder the development of communicative competence. This study aims to identify the strategies employed by English teachers at Kualin State High School to minimize the use of L1 during classroom instruction while maintaining students' understanding of the learning materials. A qualitative research design was adopted, involving two English teachers as participants. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed descriptively to identify recurring patterns in teaching practices and classroom interactions. The findings reveal that the use of L1 was relatively limited because the teachers were not native speakers of the students' local language, leading them to rely primarily on English as the medium of instruction. Indonesian was used only when necessary, particularly to explain difficult concepts, clarify instructions, or ensure students' comprehension of complex materials. Meanwhile, students tended to use their local language mainly during peer discussions to interpret unfamiliar vocabulary and difficult sentences. To address this challenge, teachers implemented a balanced instructional approach by maximizing the use of English while allowing limited and purposeful use of L1 as a supportive learning tool. This strategy increased students' exposure to English, promoted active classroom participation, enhanced confidence in using the target language, and created a more interactive learning environment. Overall, the findings suggest that controlled and strategic use of L1 can effectively support EFL teaching and learning without reducing opportunities for meaningful English language practice
