Abstract

This research aims to examine the effectiveness of the Know, Want, and Learn (KWL) strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension at the teenager class of PPA Ruba Muri (IO-0463) in Sabu. The study employed an experimental method using a pre-test and post-test design with two groups, namely an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught using the KWL strategy, whereas the control group received instruction through the Grammar Translation Method. Data were collected through a reading comprehension test and analyzed quantitatively using mean score calculation and learning mastery percentage. The findings revealed that the mean score of the experimental group increased from 37.5 to 98.96, while the control group increased from 36.25 to 67.5. Furthermore, 100% of the students in the experimental group achieved the minimum mastery criteria, compared to only 55% in the control group. Therefore, it is concluded that the KWL strategy is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. The implication of this study suggests that KWL can serve as an interactive and student-centered instructional strategy in teaching reading.
