Abstract

This study investigates students’ perceptions of utilizing the Duolingo application in learning English. The rapid development of technology has encouraged the integration of digital applications into language learning, including mobile-assisted language learning platforms such as Duolingo. This study investigates explore how students perceive the use of Duolingo as a learning medium and to identify the aspects that influence their positive perceptions. A qualitative research design was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews. The participants consisted of seven ninth- semester female university students from Artha Wacana Christian University, Kupang, who had been using Duolingo for approximately two months. The data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis procedures, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students generally have positive perceptions of Duolingo in learning English. Duolingo was found to be easy to use and understand by the students. The application presents colourful cartoon visuals accompanied by engaging sounds, creating a game-like learning environment that enhances user interest. Its content is closely related to students’ learning experiences as well as their daily activities, making the learning process more meaningful and contextual. Duolingo also provides learning reminders and immediate feedback, which help students stay consistent and aware of their progress. In addition, the application is flexible in terms of time and place of use, allowing students to learn independently according to their needs. The availability of free access further supports students in using Duolingo as a practical and accessible learning tool. In conclusion, Duolingo is perceived as an effective and engaging digital learning tool that supports students’ motivation, autonomy, and overall English learning experience. It is recommended that educators consider integrating Duolingo as a complementary medium in English language learning
