Abstract

There are four main skills in the language learning process: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Among these skills, reading skills and speaking skills are often considered to be closely related, especially in supporting language learning. The problem of this research is to find out whether there is a correlation between the reading and speaking skills of grade 8 students. The aim of this research is to find out the correlation between the English reading and speaking skills of grade 8 students at SMP Negeri 6 Kupang Tengah. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 6 Kupang Tengah, with a population of 68 class VIII students and the research sample was class VIII A, totaling 30 students. The method used in this research is a quantitative method. Researchers give tests to collect student data on reading and speaking skills. The type of test used is multiple choice by answering 10 questi ons, while the speaking test asks students to speak or tell a story and the researcher takes notes and provides an assessment. The data were statistically analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The results of the data analysis showed that the reading test score (68.33) was higher than the speaking test score (59.67). The analysis showed that the correlation coefficient between reading and speaking skills was -0.091 with a significance value of 0.634. Because the significance value is greater than 0.05, it can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between the two variables. Thus, the null hypothesis is accepted. These results indicate that reading skills do not directly influence students' speaking skills in the context of this study.
