Abstract
Speaking is a skill of using language to communicate using verbal or nonverbal means. Since English speaking is very important in English learning, this study aims to determine the effect of the inquiry-based learning method on students' English speaking ability. The research used a quantitative method by using tests (pretest, treatment, and posttest) on 28 students in class XD SMAN 4 Kupang. In the pre-test, the researcher assessed five aspects of speaking skill, namely pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The total score of the students was 1376, with an average score of 49.14. This shows that the student’s speaking skill is very low. After conducting treatment for 1 meeting, the post-test results showed that there was an increase in each aspect of the student’s speaking skills with a total overall score of 1496 with an average score of 53.43. The results showed a development or increase in the score of students' English speaking ability. The conclusion of this study is that the use of inquiry-based-learning methods on students' speaking ability can improve students' speaking ability in English.
