Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using fables in improving students' reading comprehension of narrative texts in the eight grade of SMPN 10 Kupang. The research employed a pre-experimental method using a one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 30 students. The instrument used was a reading comprehension test administered before and after the treatment using fable texts. The descriptive statistical analysis revealed an increase in students’ average scores from 62.87 (pre-test) to 65.33 (post-test). The Paired Sample T-Test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. This result suggests that the use of fables effectively improved students' reading comprehension of narrative texts. Furthermore, students' responses and observations indicated higher interest and better understanding when learning narrative texts through fables compared to traditional narrative texts. Therefore, using fables is proven to be an effective instructional medium to enhance junior high school students' reading comprehension of narrative texts.
