Abstract
Vocabulary is a crucial factor in language learning and can help students develop their language skills. The main purpose of this research was find out factors affecting poor vocabulary speaking skill of third semester students in speaking Class, at Christian ArthaWacana University. The research method used is qualitative research and the design of the research is descriptive. The instrument used were vocabulary level test and interview. The Population of this research consists of 37 students in third semester of English Educational Study Program.The sample of this research were 37 students of English Education Study Program at ArthaWacana Christian Unviersity. The research result showed there were 16 students got (80 – 100) secore an excellent category, there were 2 students got (66 – 79) score an category and there were 6 students got (20 – 57) the seore an poor category. On the results of the vocabulary test, the researcher found six students who got low scores (poor), and to find out factors that affect the poor vocabulary of these students, the researcher conducted an interview session with six students who got poor scores. There are were five factors affecting the students’poor vocabulary: Limited Exposure to language, Lack of Reading Habits, insufficient Practice and Use, Lack of Motivation, and poor Learning Strategy those are the main factors that have contributed to the speaking skills.
