Abstract

Vocabulary was the basic knowledge in English that must be learn first by learners. The research problem was does the use of spelling bee game can improve the student’s vocabulary mastery?. The main aim of this research is to finding out the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery by using spelling bee game. This research was conducted at SMPN 10 Kupang, with the total population of students from class seventh are 240 students and the sample for this research was class VII H, which consisted of 20 students. The method used in this research is a quantitative method, and the design of this research is pre-experimental. In this research, the researcher gave a test as an instrument to collect students data on vocabulary mastery. The type of test used is a spelling words test with a total 20 items. The data were analyzed statistically. The result of the analysis show that the value of t-test (10.57) was higher than the value of t-table (1.72) by applying a significance level of 0.05 with a degree freedom (df) 19 (n-1). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of spelling bee game is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery.
