Abstract
This study aims to analyze the factors causing students' difficulties in learning English at SMA Negeri 4 Kupang. The research problems addressed in this study is: What are the factors that cause students’ difficulties in learning English at SMA N 4 Kupang?. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, aiming to explore and understand these factors based on the experiences of students in the 11th grade during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through interviews with 15 students who face challenges in learning English. The results of the study indicate that there are three main factors causing difficulties for students: (1) Difficulty in translation, caused by limited vocabulary and understanding of grammatical structures; (2) Limited vocabulary, which hampers students' ability to speak and write effectively in English; and (3) Lack of motivation, influenced by monotonous teaching styles, fear of making mistakes, and suboptimal class scheduling. Based on these findings, it is recommended that teachers adopt more engaging and varied teaching methods, as well as provide more support to help build students' confidence in learning English. By addressing these issues, it is hoped that students can improve their English proficiency more effectively.
