Abstract

This study was conducted under the title “An Analysis on Subject and Verb Agreement Errors in Students' Essays Writing at 6th Semester Students in 2015/2016 Academic Year English Education Study Program of Artha Wacana Christian University.” The aims of the study are 1) To analyzing errors of subject-verb agreement in students' essays writing at 6th semester students in English education study program of Artha Wacana Christian University 2) To know the most frequent type of errors on subject-verb agreement in Essay Writing made by students' at 6th semester students in English education study program of Artha Wacana Christian University. This study analyzed the students' subject-verb agreement errors on essay writing based on theory by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982) cited in Sompong, M. (2015, p. 116-117) to analyze subject and verb agreement errors. Error cannot be self-corrected if the deviation is pointed out of the speaker. Subject-verb agreement is a singular subject requires a singular verb, and a plural subject requires a plural verb. Essay is a short piece of writing that outlines the writer's point of view or story. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method in this research. The researcher conducted the research with document analysis which is part of descriptive qualitative research. Twenty documents of students' essay writing text in English based on the title Which concepts do English teachers use in the classroom? Meanwhile, the frequencies of errors were calculated in percentage. This study founded 1) the participants contributed the three types of error in term of subject verb agreement in their essay writing, those were (1)omission (42%), (2)addition (33%), (3)misformation (20%), (4)misordering (5%) found in this study, 2) the most frequent type of subject verb agreement errors contributed by the 6th Semester Students in 2015/2016 Academic Year English Education Study Program of Artha Wacana Christian University on their essay writing was omission with the occurrence 82 errors and the percentage 42%.
