Abstract

Reading is very important in our lives, especially for students. Reading not only provides knowledge but also makes students think critically. Therefore, reading should be a primary activity for students. This study analyzes the reading interest of English Department students in the library and the factors that make them interested or not. The purpose of this study is to determine students' reading interest and several factors that influence their reading interest. The research design in this study is a mixed method that combines qualitative and quantitative approaches. The author used sampling techniques in selecting the research sample. The author distributed questionnaires to 15 English Department students and selected 3 students to be interviewed. To answer the first research question, questionnaires were distributed to determine students' reading interest. In addition, to answer the second research question, the author used semi-structured interviews to determine the factors that influence their interest. After collecting the data, the were transcribed. The results of this study indicate that students' reading interest is low. This is also supported by the interview results. The percentage is 47.5%. Students are mostly interested in reading only when they have assignments and reading is not their hobby. Furthermore, students explained that several factors influencing their reading interest were: 1) awareness of the importance of reading, 2) reading motivation, 3) language, 4) availability of books in the library, 5) intensity of time spent reading, 6) perception, 7) environment, 8) internet, and 9) learning system. Based on the research results, the authors concluded that students should increase their reading interest. Furthermore, lecturers can also help them cultivate reading interest by giving assignments that require extensive reference and reading, asking them to write summaries, and so on.
