Abstract
Hase Hawaka speech is a traditional greeting that is usually done during traditional ceremonies and also when welcoming important guests such as Regents, Pastor, Priests and people of high standing. HaseHawaka is usually played by a traditional chief who is usually called Makoan. The traditional speech ofHaseHawaka in the engagement ceremony serves as an expression of brotherhood, respect, solidarity and prayer so that the marriage ceremony runs smoothly and full of blessings. This study aims to analyze the function and meaning of HaseHawaka speech in the engagement ceremony of the Bekotaruik Uma Hat Tribe. The background of this research highlights the importance of the function and meaning of HaseHawaka speech in the Uma Hat Tribe. This study uses a qualitative ssdescriptive design to analyze the function and meaning of HaseHawakatraditional speechin the engagement ceremony at Uma HatBekotaruik. Data collection methods include participatory observation, semi-structured interviews and the last is document analysis. Elders and indigenous people in the Uma HatBekotaruik Tribe hope that researchers will continue to maintain, protect, and preserve ancestral traditions, especially in Uma Hat. The researcher hopes to comply with the rules that have been set in accordance with the rules of the ancestors so that the culture in the Uma Hat tribe is maintained.
