Abstract
Vocabulary as one of the components in English plays an important role in expressing and developing ideas clearly in each paragraph. Assessing students' use of words in descriptive text provides insights into their language expression skills. The research aims to determine the extent of students' vocabulary mastery in writing descriptive texts by applying mixed-method research. The sampling technique is total sampling with 28 samples. Meanwhile, the researcher used a writing test as a research instrument in the data collection. The findings show that the vocabulary mastery of sixth-semester students in the English education study program at Artha Wacana Christian University Kupang falls into four categories; There were 3 students categorized as excellent, 6 students were classified as good, 8 students were classified as fair, and another 11 students are classified as poor. Most categories obtained by students are at level poor. These students’ vocabulary mastery in writing descriptive text falls into the poor category, indicated by the use of vocabulary that is too general, the lack of use of noun phrases, as well as errors in spelling words. This proves that the student's vocabulary mastery in writing text descriptive falls into the poor category. Overall, these students' vocabulary mastery needs improvement to reach an excellent level, especially to enhance their writing skills, which are essential for mastery of all four skills in English.
