Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the impact of implementing Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT) on the development of students’ speaking skills at SD GMIT Manumuti. The research design employed is quasi-experimental, and it uses a quantitative approach. The study population consisted of 40 students, divided into two classes. The sample was comprised of fifth-grade students from classes VA and VB at SD GMIT Manumuti. The researcher conducted a pre-test at the initial meeting and administered the Task-Based Language Teaching method over the course of two meetings, including pre-teaching, in-class instruction, and post-teaching activities. The final meeting included a post-test. The data collected from the pre-test and post-test was analyzed based on the students' performance scores. The research study uncovered significant differences between the groups, indicating that Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is effective in improving students' speaking skills. The results of the t-test analysis also confirmed the benefits of TBLT in teaching speaking skills. The mean score of students taught without TBLT was 16.839, while those taught with TBLT scored was 38.492. This significant difference suggests that TBLT has a positive effect on speaking skills. Researcher found that t observe > t table at significant 5% with mean difference t-test on pre-test was 52.150 and post-test was 78.850. English educators are encouraged to incorporate TBLT into their teaching methods, as it fosters student engagement through varied activities, prevents boredom, and develops all four language skills in a comprehensive way. Although TBLT requires time and effort to prepare, including creating engaging materials and dictation exercises, it has been shown to be a valuable approach in keeping students engaged and enhancing their speaking abilities.
