Abstract

A person can use multiple speech styles at the same time and place. Social factors influence a person or group’s speech style. In this study, the writer looks at the speech style utilized by TED Talks speakers. The purpose of this study are to determine the speech styles used by TED Talks speakers and to investigate the social factors that influence how they deliver their speeches. The writer analyses it using Martin Joos’s theory of speech style and Janet Holmes’s social factor theory. In terms of research methodology, she portrays the data using descriptive qualitative. The result shows that there are 266 utterances that contained three types of speech style such as formal style (205 utterances), consultative style (2 utterances) and casual style (61 utterances). Furthermore, social factors that influenced the speakers included participant or the users of language, setting or social context of interaction and function of interaction.
