Abstract

The objectives of the research are to examine the kinds of interaction used by English teacher and to find out the dominant interaction in learning English. The aims of this study are to find out the kinds of interaction between the teacher and students in learning English at SD Gmit Baumata and to find out most dominant in the interaction between the teacher and students in the learning process. The instrument used for this study is observation. The data were analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard (1975). Interaction have sub-interaction, Initation : invites students to study, starts the lesson with a prayer, check the students about their homework by raising their hand, check the students whether they understand or not, ask students about the content of the topic and ends the lesson with a prayer. Response : greets the students and then students do the same, demonstrates something and the students mention it, gives opportunity for the students to express their opinion, gives practice group activity or pair work, check students about difficulty in learning and ask the students to repeat the explanation. Feedback : ask students to ask questions, appreciates students opinion, gives students to debate on one topic, gives students to discuss each other, repeats the students answer and criticizes the students if something goes wrong. The results showed that IRF has its own differences and each kinds of interaction is not dominant in all classes, it can be seen from the observation in each class.
