Abstract

This study investigates students' perceptions on the use of Artificial Intelligence in speaking English classroom at Artha Wacana Christian University. The rapid integration of AI-based tools, such as chatbots, speech recognition applications, and interactive learning platforms, has transformed language learning practices, although students' attitudes and levels of acceptance toward this technology remain varied.Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire distributed to all 20 English Education students who had experience using AI for speaking practice. The findings reveal that most participants perceive AI as a supportive learning tool that provides fast and accurate feedback, reduces anxiety, increases enjoyment, and offers flexible practice opportunities, which in turn strengthens their confidence in speaking English. However, concerns were also identified, including exercises that do not always match students' skill level, uneven increases in motivation, technical difficulties such as unstable internet access, and the belief that AI cannot fully replace teachers or authentic face-to-face interaction. Overall, this study concludes that AI has great potential to complement English speaking instruction when positioned as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for human instruction. Recommendations are addressed to lecturers, students, and future researchers to develop balanced strategies for technology-supported speaking instruction
