Abstract

Pronunciation is an essential aspect of learning to speak a foreign language. If the student does not pronounce the words correctly, it can be very difficult to the listener to understand him/her. This research aims to find out the factors influencing students pronunciation ability at the second semester in English Pronunciation Class in the English Education Study Program at Artha Wacana Christian University. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method using tests and interview to collect the data. The participants of this study were 16 of 32 students who getting low score in Pronunciation class, sample of this research was selected by using porposive sampling technique. The researcher used tests and interview to collect data. In the first procedure, the researcher gave the students pronunciation test consisting 24 words of Consonants and 10 words of Vowel and Diphtongs. The second procedure the researcher made interview with students and asked 10 questions to get the real arguments about students pronunciation. The result showed that most of the students had problem in segmental feature to pronouncing word with 9 students having problem in pronouncing fricative consonant /z/, 8 students having problem in pronouncing fricative consonant /s/ and vowel /u:/, 5 students having problem in pronouncing fricative consonant /ʃ/ and /f/, 4 students having problem in pronouncing cosonant /θ/. The result of interview showed that there were 4 factors influencing students pronunciation ability, and the most dominant factors is mother tongue interference and followed by sound system differences between L1 and L2, followed by inconsistency English vowel causes pronunciation confusion and influence of spelling on pronunciation
