Abstract
This study was conducted to address students’ low speaking ability in English, which is commonly caused by limited speaking practice, teacher-centered instruction, and psychological barriers such as shyness and fear of making mistakes. In response to this problem, the study aimed to investigate whether the Micro Role-Play method could improve the speaking skills of Grade VII students at SMP Negeri 2 Soe. The research employed a quantitative quasi-experimental design using a pre-test and post-test control group. The population consisted of 30 students who were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught using the Micro Role-Play method, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data were collected through speaking tests assessing pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, as well as questionnaires to measure students’ perceptions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis, including paired-sample and independent-sample t-tests. The findings showed a significant improvement in the experimental group, with the mean score increasing from 43.07 in the pre-test to 81.6 in the post-test. Statistical results confirmed that Micro Role-Play was more effective than conventional methods. Additionally, 96.67% of students expressed positive perceptions, reporting increased confidence, motivation, and engagement. The study concludes that Micro Role-Play effectively enhances students’ speaking skills and recommends its integration into English teaching to promote communicative competence in junior high schools
