Abstract

This study examines the use of personal pronouns in the Tetun Terik language, with a focus on Asumanu Village, Belu Regency. The purpose of the research is to identify the forms of personal pronouns and to examine the parameters that influence their use in social contexts. The study applies the theories of Macfadyen (2007) and Alwi et al. (2003). Data were collected through interviews with eight informants from various age groups and social statuses. The findings reveal five categories of 28 personal pronouns in Tetun Terik: (1) 7 subject and object pronouns, (2) 7 possessive pronouns, (3) 7 possessive adjectives, and (4) 7 reflexive pronouns. Pronouns in the Tetun language are used to replace the names of people, objects, or groups, taking into account number, person (first, second, or third), and the level of closeness or politeness. Age, social status, and the closeness of the relationship between speakers strongly influence the use of pronouns. Age: 7 Pronouns are used by younger people when addressing older people, while 6 pronouns are used by older people when addressing younger people, and generally, 4 pronouns are used by all ages. Social Status: 6 pronouns are used by the village head when speaking to staff. Conversely, 6 different pronouns are used by the staff when addressing the village head. In informal contexts (such as close friends, despite status differences), 6 pronouns are used. In formal contexts (close friends in formal situations), 3 pronouns are used.
