Abstract

This thesis is titled A descriptive study of metaphors used in Hamayang ( A ritual prayers ) of East Sumba people intended to investigate metaphors, literal and metaphorical meanings found in Hamayang (a ritual prayer) of East Sumba people. The result of the study is useful for both the academic world and the practical life of the society, especially the people of East Sumba Regency. To inspire the study, there are a number of previous study related studies were reviewed. To easily understand, direct, and limit the discussion of the study, a number of basic concepts were defined. To analyze the data, the theory of metaphor was applied. This study used qualitative method. The data were obtained through recording, interview, and note taking. The data from the informants were obtained through life recording. The data were analyzed through steps of transcribing, listing the metaphors, translation, and interpretation. In line with the problem statement, there found metaphors njara rara “red horse” and landu jangga “tuft tall”, literally those words belong to parts of animals body.. In accordance with the benefits and the finding of the study some suggestions are proposed. (1) The writer hopes this writing can enrich the study of metaphors. (2) As the one of culture that must be maintained by all components either government or society.
