Abstract

This study aims to analyze challenges faced by eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Amarasi in learning English speaking skills. A total of 20 students participated in this research, selected based on their involvement in English speaking classes. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, allowing the researcher to explore students’ personal experiences and perceptions regarding their difficulties in speaking English. The analysis was guided by theories from Brown (2007), Krashen (1982), and other scholars in second language acquisition. The findings of this study revealed eight major challenges: vocabulary deficiency, pronunciation issues, grammar limitations, anxiety or shyness, lack of speaking opportunities, difficulty understanding native speaker speed, accent comprehension problems, and time pressure when speaking. Among these, vocabulary deficiency and time pressure were identified as the most dominant issues. These challenges were found to be both linguistic and psychological aspects, indicating the need for more comprehensive teaching strategies. The study highlights the importance of creating supportive learning environments, increasing students’ speaking practice, and reducing anxiety through communicative and student-centered teaching approaches. These findings are expected to help educators and curriculum developers improve speaking instruction and support students in becoming more confident English speakers.
