Abstract
This study analyzes the morphological structure of the Anakalang language, focusing on the use of derivational and inflectional morphemes and their role in shaping lexical and grammatical meaning. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected from ten native speakers in Manurara Village, Central Sumba. Two derivational morphemes were identified: b’a-, which converts noun into temporal nouns (b’awalla ‘waking time’ from walla ‘wake up’), and pa-, which derives concrete nouns from verbs (paangu ‘food’ from angu ‘eat’). Six inflectional morphemes were also found: na- (definiteness, nakauki ‘that monkey’ from kauki ‘monkey’), d’a- (plurality, daahu ‘those dogs’ from ahu ‘dog’), ta- (locative, tahed’ang ‘on the shelf’ from hed’ang ‘shelf’), -d’a (third-person plural subject, haingid’a ‘they one’ from haingi ‘one’), -taka (intensifier, pelitaka ‘really take’ from peli ‘take’), and -na (definite pronoun, tautaluna ‘he who is more’ from tautalu ‘more’). Derivational morphemes form new lexemes, while inflectional morphemes mark grammatical relations such as number, possession, definiteness, and intensity. The findings highlight the morphological richness of Anakalang and the importance of linguistic documentation for language preservation. This research contributes significantly to morphological studies in linguistics.
