Abstract
This research investigates the forms, functions, and meanings of conjunctions in Kupang Malay Language (KML) as found in the Book of 2 Timothy in the KML Bible. Kupang Malay is a creole language spoken in East Nusa Tenggara, serving as a lingua franca among speakers from various ethnic backgrounds. Conjunctions play a crucial role in connecting clauses and shaping meaning, yet they remain underexplored in KML studies, especially in religious texts. Using a descriptive qualitative method with document analysis, the researcher identified and classified all conjunctions in the text according to form (simple, compound, phrasal), type (coordinating, subordinating), and function. The findings reveal 51 conjunction tokens: simple conjunctions dominate, including deng (and), ma (but), ko (or), te (because), and kalo (if); the compound gara-gara (because) conveys strong causation; and phrasal conjunctions such as samake (as/like), padahal (although), and karmana (how) add nuance. Functionally, KML conjunctions express addition, contrast, cause, condition, time, comparison, concession, and manner. Cultural insights emerged, such as the frequent use of samake to express analogy and solidarity, and the contrastive use of ma and padahal to highlight theological points. The study contributes to KML linguistic documentation and shows how conjunctions in KML are not merely grammatical tools but also reflect cultural values and narrative styles in sacred discourse.
