Abstract
This study investigates the discourse functions of deixis in Lii Hawu, a language spoken on Sabu Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The research aims to identify and analyze how deictic expressions are used in natural discourse to express meaning, refer to people or objects, locate events in time and space, and construct shared understanding between speakers and listeners. The data for this study were obtained from existing documentary materials, such as a corpus of traditional stories and daily narratives and were also collected through interviews with native speakers. The analysis is based on the theory of discourse by Halliday (2014) and the classification of deixis by Levinson (2006), focusing on their pragmatic functions within specific contexts. The result of this study reveals three main types of deictic function in Lii Hawu: spatial, temporal, and referential deixis. Spatial deixis, such as d'ee‘this’, nad’ee ‘this’, pa d'ee ‘here’, and uhi ‘these’, is used to indicate the relative location between the speaker, the listener, and the referent. Temporal deixis, including expressions like lod'od'ee ‘today’, awe nad'ee ‘now’, and awe do uru ‘the old days’, serves to mark the time of events about the moment of speaking. Referential deixis, such as napunène ‘that’, refers to participants or entities in the discourse, either previously mentioned or understood from the context. These results show that deictics in Lii Hawu are not only linguistic markers of reference and location, but also serve to manage interaction, emphasize shared knowledge, and structure information in conversation. The result are useful for developing culturally relevant learning materials and for improving the accuracy and clarity of Lii Hawu translations, particularly in texts such as the bible. Overall, this research supports efforts to preserve and deepen the understanding of the language and culture of the Lii Hawu speaking community.
