Abstract
This study aims to determine the symbol and meaning of Traditional Woven Fabrics (Sarong) in Ternate Village, Northwest Alor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The research problems from this research are (1) What are the symbols found on the traditional woven fabrics(sarong) in Ternate Village, Northwest Alor District, East Nusa Tenggara? (2) What are the meanings of Symbols found on the traditional woven fabrics(sarong) in Ternate Village, Northwest Alor District, East Nusa Tenggara?. This research can provide a clear, correct and complete description of the characters, symbols and meaning on the traditional woven fabrics(sarong) in Ternate. The writer used an observation and interviews, and note-taking to collect the data. The writer used the semiotics theory of Pierce to analyze the data. That the writer finds the six symbols and meanings of the traditional woven fabric(sarong) in the Ternate village were; Baololong/sunshine it’ means as a source of light of life for the people of Ternate village, Ikang Pekella/stingray means the tenacity or fighting spirit of the village community in facing the dynamics of life, they don't want any hostility, no matter how big the hostility that occurs on land will be reconciled when they go to sea, Tablolong /Tortoise means home and will bring good luck, by living in this natah we will be lucky, Gaja/Elephants means the strength and greatness of the almighty, Moko/dowry means belis in marriage to unite, and the Palinta/Kapok tree cotton means a sign of giving up fruit, the cotton-shaped flowers start to fly, indicating it's time to garden.
