Abstract
The research problems of this study are: (1) what are the types of illocutionary acts used by the main character in the movie “American Assassin”?; (2) what is the dominant type of illocutionary acts used by the main character in the movie “American Assassin” ?. The aims of this research are: (1) to know the types of illocutionary acts used by the main character in the movie “American Assassin”; (2) to find out the dominant type of illocutionary acts used by the main character in the movie “American Assassin”. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method because the data were the utterances of the main characters in the “American Assassin” movie. The writer analyzed every utterance in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences which utter by the main character in scenes and then divided each utterance into its respective classification of illocutionary act based on the Searle”s theory about illocutionary act and context underlying the utterances by using theory of Holmes. After collected the data, the writer analyzed the data and found out four types of illocutionary acts (representatives, directives, commisives, and expressives) performed by the main character in the movie “American Assassin”.First, representative acts that is statement whether it is true or not, for example: a. “yeah, I’ve figured out a lot about myself”(an agreeing); b. “I thought you were eyes on”(an opining); c. “Here, we are in beautiful Ibiza,Spain” (stating a fact); d. “So, we find Behruz, we find Hurley”(concluding). Second, directives acts is attempts by the speaker to get the hearer to do something, for example: a. “wait a second !”(ordering); b. “what do I need toknow about this guy?”(questioning) ; c. “can I just gettwo drinks, please?”(requesting); d. “I was gonna suggest we maybe speed this whole thingup ?”. Third, commisive, is speech act that commit the speaker to some future course action, for example: a. “no, thanks. I'm okay”(refusing); b. “I won't, I won't”(promising); c. “okay, I'm going with you”(offering). The last is expressive, is expression that shows psychological state of the speaker, for example: a. “sorry, Mr. Nazir”(apologizing); b. “I'm sorry about your handler.”(condoling). There are 196 data contains illocutionary acts. The representatives are the dominant type of illocutionary acts used by the main character. There are 78 data containing representative acts.Then, the main character used some communication function to conveyed his intention to the hearer, three of them are questioning which is the most frequent of the communication function with 26 data, requesting with 24 data and answering with 13 data.
