Abstract

The title of this writing is Cultural Semiotics of Visual Signs on Megalithic Stones in Uma Bara Village, East Sumba Regency. This research uses qualitative method in accordance with the theory of Ferdinand de Saussure and based on semiotics field especially related to cultural semiotics. The source of data was taken from megalithic stones and a Wunangu (cultural practitioner) by observation and interview. The research questions are: A). What are the visual signs found on megalithic stones in Uma Bara village, and B). What are the connotative meanings conveyed by visual signs on megalithic stones in Uma Bara village. And the findings based on research question one are: (1) two persons praying ‘hamayangu’ carving, (2) rooster ‘manu wulu’ carving, (3) traditional village ‘Paraingu’ carving, (4) turtle & crocodile ‘kara-wuya’ carving, (5) earring ‘Mamuli’ carving, (6) cockatoo ‘kaka’ carving, (7) skull monument ‘Andungu’ carving, (8) dance hand in hand ‘Pai Palonda Lima’ statue, (9) mourner ‘Papanggangu’ carving, (10) deer ‘Ruha’ carving, (11) traditional dance ‘Ninggu Harama’ carving, (12) buffalo ‘Karambua’ carving, (13) moon & sun ‘Wulangu-Lodu’ carving, (14) shrimp ‘Kurangu’ carving, (15) Horse Ridden by the Owner ‘Njara Pakaliti’ statue, (16) rooster & pig ‘Manu-Wei’ statue, and based on second research question two are: (1) gratitude, (2) respect, (3) hope in God, (4) greatness of human soul, (5) worship center, (6) greatness, (7) just noble, (8) power, (9) wisdom leadership, (10) respect for woman, (11) fertility, (12) heirlooms, (13) dowry, (14) deliberation, (15) unity, (16) championship in war, (17) courage, (18) heroism, (19) repetance of sins, (20) apologies, (21) nobility, (22) mediator, (23) wild, (24) frightened person, (25) spirit, (26) heroism, (27) welcoming, (28) dowry, (29) offering for God, (30) wisdom of intermediary, (31) noble, (32) youth, (33) reincarnation, (34) dishonest, (35) desire to be achieved, (36) tycoon, (37) heroism, (38) mighty, (39) dowry, (40) vehicle of Marapu (the departed sprits) to Prai Marapu (heaven), (41) majestic country, and (42) offering. Each visual signs have some connotative meanings. For example: Hamayangu carving as gratitude, Manu Wulu carving as greatness of human soul, Paraingu carving as greatness. The writer concludes that the connotative meanings of visual signs that found in Uma Bara village have close relationship with the socio-cultural of Sumba people especially at Uma Bara village.
