Abstract
This thesis is about grammatical cohesion in Joe Biden’s speech text. The purposes of the research are to find out what are the types of grammatical cohesion used in the speech text and to find out the type of grammatical cohesion used dominantly in the speech text. The method is descriptive qualitative. It is classified as documentary analysis. Through counting the percentage of every grammatical cohesion devices that appear in the speech text by Scinto’s formula. Based on the observe and analysis, it is find out that the devices in grammatical cohesion are found in the speech text. It can be concluded that four types of grammatical cohesion which are used in the speech text are reference, for example “I must admit it surprised me”, the subject I, it, and me as personal reference refers to Joe Biden. Substitution for example “Is that Ruth Ann? Yes, it is!”,it substitute Ruth Ann, the word it as nominal substitute. Ellipsis for example “I’ll work as hard for those who didn’t vote for me as those who did”, the word who did in this sentence refers to people that vote for him (Joe Biden), it is classified as nominal ellipsis. And conjunction for example “I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide but unify”, the word but as adversative conjunction which used to give more the opposite idea of previous idea. Then the dominant type of grammatical cohesion is reference, especially personal reference, the percentage reaches 92.57%. Based on the findings, the suggestions are recommended to further researcher in order they can use different genre in the object of study. Therefore, the content of the data is different and they will find the different findings. Lastly, hopefully this research can be used as the example for readers and other researcher to understand more about grammatical cohesion.
