Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) in improving the writing skills of second-grade students at SMPN 4 Kupang, specifically in composing recount texts. This research utilized a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 27 students who took a pre-test to measure their initial writing ability, received writing instruction using the GTM method on recount texts across several sessions, and concluded with a post-test. The total pre-test score averaged 63, while the post-test score significantly increased to an average of 90. Data analysis using the Paired Samples t-Test showed a significance value (Sig. 1-tailed) = 0.000 with a t-value = 10.81, indicating a statistically significant improvement in students' writing skills. The findings confirm that GTM is effective in enhancing writing performance, particularly in understanding sentence structures, applying simple past tense, and organizing logical sequences of events in recount texts. Therefore, GTM serves as a viable alternative strategy for teaching writing in junior high school. Future research is recommended to explore the application of GTM in teaching other text genres and language skills across diverse student proficiency levels.
