Abstract
This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of their reading interest in the Extensive Reading course at Artha Wacana Christian University. The focus is placed on how students interpret, experience, and respond to reading activities during the course. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews with ten third-semester students actively participating in the Extensive Reading class. The findings reveal varying levels of reading interest among students, categorized into high, moderate, and low. Students with high reading interest expressed enjoyment, motivation, and consistent engagement with reading activities, both inside and outside the classroom. Those with moderate interest participated mainly due to academic requirements or peer influence, while students with low interest viewed reading as a compulsory task and often felt bored or disconnected. Factors influencing their perceptions included personal interest in the reading materials, classroom atmosphere, peer encouragement, and the opportunity to choose relevant reading topics. Overall, the study highlights that students’ reading interest is closely tied to their individual perceptions, motivations, and emotional responses to the learning environment. Understanding these perceptions provides valuable insights for improving the reading experience in higher education settings.
