Abstract
This research was conducted with the title: The implementation of MURDER (Mood, Understand, Recall, Detect, Elaborate, and Review) Strategy to Improve Reading Comprehension at SMP Negeri 1 Kupang. The research problem is "Does the use of the MURDER Strategy improve students' reading comprehension?" The aim of this research is to find out whether MURDER strategy can improve reading comprehension or not. To answer this research problem, the writer used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design by comparing two groups given different treatments. The first group was the group that received treatment totaling 29 students and the second group was the group that did not receive treatment totaling 29 students. Both groups were assigned to carry out a pre-test. The group that received the treatment was taught narrative text using MURDER strategy and the group that did not receive the treatment was given narative text but was not taught MURDER strategy in reading. From the pre-test results the data showed that the total score of the experimental group was smaller than the control group, namely 2.258 < 7.855. Then both classes were given a post-test, after being given treatment in the experimental group, the total score of the experimental group was higher, namely 8.913 > 6.555 Based on the results of the student test calculations was seen that there was a difference between pre-test and post-test carried out by 58 students as a sample student of SMP N 1 Kupang. The calculate t- value obtained is 9.32, which is greater than the t-table, namely 1.69, so the accepted hypothesis is the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. From the accumulated data above, it can be concluded that teaching using MURDER strategy can improve students' reading comprehension.
