Abstract
This research was conducted to improve students' listening skills in teaching English using dictation techniques Class D of Eight grade at SMP Negeri 20 Kota Kupang. The sample for this research was 30 students. The method used in this research is quantitative and the research design is Pre-Experimental. The aim of this research is to measure the improvement in students' listening skill after implementing dictation techniques. To collect data, researchers conducted a pre-test, treatment and post-test. In analyzing the data, researchers used simple statistical analysis of students' pre-test and post-test scores. Data collection techniques can be determined by calculating the average score of students in the Pre-Experimental class. The research results showed that there was a significant difference between the scores of students in the Pre-Experimental class. There were significant results between the pre-test and post-test based on the results, the calculated t-test value (9.57) was higher compared to the t-table value (1.69) with df =N-1. This means that the hypothesis (H0) students’ listening skill can not be improved by using dictation techniques is rejected and the hypothesis (H1) students’ listening skill can be improves by using dictation techniques is accepted. This shows that the influence of dictation techniques has an influence on students' listening skills. In addition, the mean score in the Pre-Experimental class was 66,33 in the pre-test and the mean post-test score was 84,33 in the post-test total scores was 2.530 and the total pre-test score was 1.990. Therefore, use dictation techniquescan improve on students' listening skill.
