Abstract
The title of this research isthe Semiotic Analysis on Sa'o Ria (The Traditional House) of Lio Ethnic. The objective of this research were to describe (1) the meaning and (2) social function of the symbols on the Sa'o Ria (traditional house) of Lio ethnic in Wologai traditional village in Ende regency. This research used qualitative method in accordance with the theory of Charles Sanders Pierce and based on semiotic fields especially culture code such as architecture and ornament. The source of data was taken from Sa'o Ria and a mosalaki (customary holder) by observation and interview. The finding of this study shows that there are meanings and social function of symbols that found on the traditional house: (1) Meanings:fertility, prosperity, greatness, joy, discipline, loyalty, protection, bravely,relationship, gratitude,spirit, beauty, unity, light,sun, truth,guidance, highest, and respect. (2) Social function: respect for a mother, sacrifice, expression of happiness, accompanist in traditional dance, description of hard work, protector, instruction for local people,form of gratitude to the ancestors, expression of joy, encouragement to maintain tradition and custom, indicates the local people must pound rice using a mortar, guide in carrying for unity and brotherhood, illustrate about the life situation of ancestor in ancient times, as light and also as a place to give birth for the local people which the birth process runs smoothly, guardian’s protection of nature and its contents, time to carrying out the customary process (Nggua) and calculating the time for giving birth, and the last is dowry for a women/ mother as a form of respecting the existence of woman.These carvings have close relationship with the socio-cultural life of the people in the Wologai traditional village.
