Abstract
This research was conducted to improve students' vocabulary in teaching synonyms and antonyms using smart box media in science and social science class of Eleventh grade at SMA Kristen 1 Kupang. The aim of this research is to measure the improvement in students' vocabulary mastery after implementing smart box media. Researchers use Classroom Action Research (CAR) as a research method. To collect data, researchers conducted a pre-test, treatment and post-test. In analyzing the data, researchers used simple statistical analysis of students' pre-test and post-test scores. Research findings show that the use of smart box media can improve students' mastery of English vocabulary. This is proven by the increase in student post-test results after implementing smart box media in the learning process. Students obtained an amount of 790 from the pre-test results and the post-test increase obtained by students was 1300. The way to get students' pre-test and post-test scores is to calculate using the student achievement score formula, where the number of correct numbers is divided by the number of questions and multiplied by 100 and calculated all the pretest and posttest scores from 15 students in the experimental class to get the total pretest and posttest scores, namely the total pre-test score was 790 and the total post-test score was 1300. After applying the smart box game media In other words, student scores increased by 64%. The way to get it is to use the percentage increase formula, where the final result is subtracted from the initial result divided by the initial result then multiplied by 100%. After calculated t-test result while the t-test value is (6,08 > 2,04 ). This means that the hypothesis is accepted. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the use of smart box media in teaching synonyms and antonyms is effective in improving vocabulary mastery in science and social sciences class of eleventh Grade students at SMA Kristen 1 Kupang.
