Abstract

This article is the result of research that examined teacher strategies in teaching descriptive writing to school students at SMPN 20 Kupang. The research was based on the question: What teaching strategies do teachers use in teaching descriptive writing? Qualitative data was obtained from observations and interviews. An intervention was carried out with 2 teachers for one week using Spencer’s writing model (2005) to improve the teaching of writing strategies examined. Transcribed word for word and analyzed thematically coding. The findings show that by implementing this strategy the teacher is able to improve students’ ability to write descriptive texts. However, after the writing intervention, they improved their teaching strategies by incorporating richer writing descriptions containing sensory details, figurative language, and clear words. These findings can be used as guidelines for teaching writing in any teacher’s professional development program. Teacher training can be a starting point not only to increase teachers’ knowledge and skills in teaching writing but also to increase their awareness of beliefs about teaching and learning.
