Abstract
The aims of the research are: 1). To find out the types of homonyms in Wewewa language (a language spoken by Wewewa society in southwest Sumba regency) and 2). To find out the meaning of homonyms in the Wewewa language (a language spoken by Wewewa society in Southwest Sumba regency). This research used descriptive qualitative method. To collect the data interviewed was being applied. The result of this study showed that there are three types of homonyms found in Wewewa language. Namely: first is complete homonyms, such as; limma, we’e, gha’i, mbei, katillu, moro, kalowo, toro, keto, ghua. Second is Partial homonyms, such as; kalawara and kalawwara, luwa and luwwa, ndua and duwa, dingira and dingngira. Third is grammatical homonyms such as; tenda, kedu, kabika, wella, eka, tukku, pote, nga’a, pogo,tama. The meaning of words complete homonyms such as; the word limma means hand and five. We’e means water and sarong. Gha’i means foot and have. Mbei means female and iron, katillu means ear and deaf. Moro means medicine and blue. Kalowo means banana and papaya. Toro means tomato and eggplant. Keto means knife and machete. Ghua means like and fruit. The meaning of words partial homonyms such as; kalawara means sick, and kalawwara means pet. Luwa means many and luwwa means cassava. Ndua means good and duwa means heal. Dingngira means clear and ndingngira means curcuma. The meaning of words grammatical homonyms, such as; the word tenda means kick, the word category is verb and the word tent is category of noun. Kedu means steal (v) and monkey (n). kabika means suck (v) and stupid(adj). Wella means wake up (v) and peace (n). Eka means raise (v) and different (n). Tukku means hit (v) and pound (n). Pote means spin (v) and livestock (n). Nga’a means eat (v) and rice means (n). Pogo means fell (v) and axe means (n). Tama means enter (v) and sharp (n). Pando means add (v) and eight (n). Uttu means collect (v) and lice (n).
