Abstract
This study examines the forms and functions of personal pronouns in the Dengka dialect of the Rote language. The purposes of this study are to identify the forms of personal pronouns and to examine the factors that influence their use in social contexts. The data were collected through interviews with 10 native speakers of the Dengka dialect from different age groups and social backgrounds. The findings reveal that the Dengka dialect has 21 personal pronouns classified into three categories: 7 subject pronouns, 7 object pronouns, and 7 possessive pronouns. These personal pronouns are used to refer to the speaker, the addressee, and other participants according to person, number, and grammatical function. The findings also show that the use of personal pronouns is influenced by age, kinship, social status, and the relationship between speakers. Younger speakers tend to replace second-person pronouns with kinship terms when addressing older people or respected individuals as a sign of politeness and respect, whereas direct second-person pronouns are more commonly used among family members, friends, and people of the same age. These findings demonstrate that the use of personal pronouns in the Dengka dialect reflects not only grammatical functions but also social relationships between speakers.
